How many followers do you need on Instagram in 2026?

Updated September 2026

You don't need any followers to post, run Stories or share a link on Instagram. A few features do have a follower minimum, though, and those numbers get repeated (and misquoted) all over the internet. This guide lists only the thresholds we could confirm from Instagram's own help pages, its official announcements or reputable reporting, with a link next to each one so you can check it yourself.

One caveat before the numbers: Instagram changes eligibility rules, rolls features out country by country, and often adds conditions beyond follower count, such as age, account type and policy compliance. Treat any threshold, including the ones below, as "necessary but not sufficient".

The short answer

Going Live: 1,000 followers

This is the change that surprised the most people. In August 2025, Instagram started blocking public accounts with fewer than 1,000 followers from starting a live broadcast. As reported by TechCrunch, users who fall short see an in-app notice saying that "only public accounts with 1,000 followers or more will be able to create live videos". A Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch the goal was to improve the overall Live viewing experience.

Before this, anyone could go live regardless of audience size. If you used Live as a low-effort way to connect with a small following, you now need to cross the 1,000 line first, or use Stories and broadcast-style updates in the meantime.

Link stickers in Stories: no minimum

Older guides still say you need 10,000 followers to add a link to a Story. That hasn't been true since October 2021, when Instagram expanded the Link sticker to all accounts. The same announcement notes one important exception: new accounts, and accounts that repeatedly share content that breaks the Community Guidelines (for example hate speech or misinformation), won't get access to the Link sticker.

So if you can't see the sticker, the reason is more likely account age or a policy issue than your follower count.

Subscriptions: 10,000 followers

Subscriptions let followers pay you monthly for subscriber-only content. Instagram's eligibility page for Subscriptions sets the bar at 10,000 followers, together with a professional (creator or business) account, being at least 18, living in a country where the feature is available, and meeting Instagram's monetization policies.

Hitting 10,000 makes you eligible, not guaranteed. Instagram checks policy compliance separately, and you can see what you qualify for in the monetization status section of your professional dashboard, which Instagram describes on its monetization eligibility help page.

Gifts on Reels: check the current eligibility page

Gifts let viewers send you small paid tokens of appreciation on Reels, bought with Meta's in-app currency, Stars. Instagram's help page about gifts lists the eligibility rules, which include a professional account, being 18 or older and setting up a payout account.

You'll see a specific follower number quoted for Gifts across the web, but it has changed since launch and differs between sources, so we're not repeating one here. Check the help page before you plan around it.

The blue badge: notability, not follower count

Instagram has two routes to a verified badge, and neither one publishes a follower minimum.

The first is the traditional notability route. According to Instagram's requirements to apply for a verified badge, your account must be public, have a bio, a profile photo and at least one post, and represent a real person, registered business or entity. It must be the unique presence of that person or business, and it must be notable: "a well-known, highly searched-for person, brand or entity", typically one featured in multiple news sources. Instagram's own post on understanding verification is explicit that verification "signals authenticity and notability", that it isn't an endorsement, and that being verified "doesn't mean that your content is favored by our systems".

In other words, a large follower count on its own won't get you verified, and press coverage matters more than numbers.

Meta Verified: a paid subscription with identity checks

The second route is Meta Verified, a paid monthly subscription that gives you the badge after an identity check. The eligibility requirements for Meta Verified focus on identity and account standing: you must be at least 18, have a prior posting history, use a profile name and photo that match a government-issued ID, have two-factor authentication turned on, and follow Instagram's rules. Prices and bundles vary by country, so check the price in your own app rather than relying on a figure quoted elsewhere.

Why these numbers keep changing, and how to check yours

Instagram adjusts thresholds when it wants to raise the quality of a feature (as with Live) or open a feature to more people (as with link stickers). Some features launch in a few countries first. Blog posts, including this one, can go out of date.

Two places inside the app give you the most reliable answer for your own account:

  • Professional dashboard, where monetization status shows which earning tools you can use and why others are unavailable.
  • Account Status, which shows whether anything you've posted has affected your account or your eligibility to be recommended.

Where a follower number fits in

For Live and Subscriptions, the follower count really is the gate. For almost everything else, what Instagram rewards is how people respond to your posts. We cover that in followers vs engagement.

If you decide to give your count a lift toward a threshold, go in with clear eyes. Buying followers breaks Instagram's rules, bought followers won't comment or message you, and counts can drop over time (we explain why in why follower counts drop). Cedarfollow's packages include gradual delivery, likes on your new posts with a 1-year engagement guarantee and free refills if the count falls. It isn't a substitute for an audience you earn yourself.

FAQ

Do you need 1,000 followers to go live on Instagram?

Yes, for public accounts. Since August 2025, Instagram has shown public accounts with fewer than 1,000 followers a notice that only public accounts with 1,000 followers or more can create live videos.

How many followers do you need for a link in Instagram Stories?

None. Instagram expanded the Link sticker to all accounts in October 2021. New accounts and accounts that repeatedly break the Community Guidelines may not have access.

How many followers do you need for Instagram Subscriptions?

Instagram's eligibility page lists 10,000 followers, along with a professional account, being 18 or older, living in an eligible country and following its monetization policies.

Can I get verified on Instagram with a lot of followers?

Not on follower count alone. The notability route requires a well-known, highly searched-for person or brand, usually one covered in multiple news sources. Meta Verified is a paid subscription based on an identity check, and neither route publishes a follower minimum.
